Web Usability : Amazon.com

Amazon.com one of the leading company as online retailer. They not only selling books but also selling tons of products and service. Just one click way, an user can select the products and checkout — it will be shipped for free or depends of locations it charged for shipping as shipping cost.

However, few things I noticed and that’s really killing my time and as well Amazon developers maybe they skipped or somehow they didn’t notified about this problem.

#1: Keyboard Failed: Using keyboard an user can’t able to select the category of the products of service. We shouldn’t depends of mouse all the time in anyway. But, Keyboard should give the priority and make the website accessible and usable and easier. Where, I checked and using TAB button you can move on top of the Shop All Departments but you will not get drag and drop functions using keyboard, just hit the enter it will move to the main directly page of categories.

#2: Wish Listed: If any products I added to Wishlist and in the search results of products or service — any symbol should show that the product or service already listed under my Wishlist. Where, Amazon.com doesn’t showing any indicator  — an user can re-try to add same products twice and then amazon will notify “its already added”. Why don’t make it more easier for the users.

#3: Ajax Based Wish List: To adding a products in your wishlist, you have to select and it will redirect and added onto users wishlist. Why don’t Amazon make it Ajax Based and save users time and show that it’s instantly added to wishlist — that would be really so great and much more user friendly.

The UX Canon: Essential Reading For The User Experience Designer

For some time I had been slowly acquiring books, reviewing books, and recommending books to collegues who were interested in “getting into” interaction design, user experience design, information architecture or usability. This eventually led to me cataloging my list of what I consider the best books in the field. With help from my friend Dave Malouf (co-founder of the IxDA and Professor of Interaction Design at SCAD), we edited this list of my canon, and now I want to share this list with you. If you have a question about a particular book, feel free to email me.

Next steps, besides slowly acquiring and reviewing more books, is to begin further classification of books. Until that can happen, this is my UX library. If I don’t own it or haven’t read it, it’s definitely not on this list. At the same time, there are books that I own that aren’t included because I thought they sucked for one reason or another. The fourth option is that I have it, have read it, liked it, but simply forgot to include it. So if you ask “Why haven’t you included X, Y, or Z – it’s one of those reasons.”

3 Ways To Improve Your Standard Web Usability

Most recently I’m looking for something web usability and got great tips which is shared by Regnard at webstandards. Just Three Ways To Improve Web Usability. Still, I’m looking for new something, if you have — share in comments.

Web designers and developers can do three simple steps to improve their working usability skills:

  1. Know Your Users – This step puts almost everything into context. By using any available method to elicit feedback from the target users, you can have a better what they really need to do effectively on the website.
  2. Design For the Users - Upon having a better idea what the users need,  the next step is to make it more easy for them to complete their tasks. Let’s take an online store for example: Place critical links in easier to access areas and make prioritized buttons like checkout or emptying the cart more conspicuous.
  3. Test! – A wise man said that simple testing beats zero testing any day, so try to test your design. It doesn’t have to be an elaborate lab set-up, but having an open mind get weird and unexpected from a user helps.
